Choosing Stem Wire: Diameter and Length

Choose wire that supports the arrangement without unnecessary bulk. The flower, unsupported length and attachment method all affect the choice.

Start with the task

Fine wire is easier to conceal and wrap. Thicker wire generally gives more support when material and temper are comparable. There is no single diameter for every flower head or stem. Test a sample with the intended flowers and attachment method before ordering in quantity.

Diameter and length

HSYWIRE stem-wire specifications currently list 0.3–1.8 mm diameters and 130–500 mm cut lengths. These are product ranges, not a promise that every combination is stocked. Confirm the combination you need.

Measure the section to be supported and allow for fastening. An unnecessarily long unsupported section may bend even when the wire feels stiff in the hand. See Floral Stem Wire specifications.

Finish

Choose for appearance and exposure. Green lacquer can help hide wire among foliage. Consider coating condition and intended use for galvanized and lacquered products; neither is a guarantee against staining in every wet arrangement.

Pointed or blunt ends

Specify blunt ends or one pointed end where available. A point can assist insertion, but the end style depends on the design and handling method. Keep sharp ends away from exposed contact areas.

Order clearly

Give metric diameter, cut length, finish and end style. If using a gauge number, identify SWG or AWG. See the gauge chart and quotation checklist.
